The Experts on Generic Rimonabant

One of the newer drugs on the market for weight loss is generic Rimonabant. Also marketed under the brand name Accomplia, generic Rimonabant promises weight loss by repressing a person's cravings for food. Here is a look at what some of the experts have to say about generic Rimonabant and its effectiveness.

The RIO-Europe Study

A one year RIO-Europe study was performed to look at the effects of generic rimonabant on the amount of weight loss as well as the metabolic risk factors for 1507 patients who were either overweight or obese. Some participants in the study were given placebos, and others were given generic rimonabant in 5 mg or 20 mg dosages. Patients who intended to quit smoking and patients that had a history of mental illness were excluded from the study. The study found that the patients who received generic rimonabant had greater weight loss results than the patients who received the placebo.
Since safety is always a concern with new diet drugs hitting the market, the side effects of generic rimonabant were also studied. Some of the patients receiving the generic rimonabant reported mild depressive symptoms and mood swings while taking the medication, but no significant change in mental condition was reported after using generic rimonabant for a year.

The University of Leige Study

Another study of generic rimonabant was done by the University of Leige in Belgium. There were over 1000 participants in the study, and all participants were obese or overweight and had type two diabetes. As with the RIO-Europe study, patients received either a placebo or a 5 mg or 10 mg dose of rimonabant. Patients receiving the highest dose of generic rimonabant lost an average of 5.3 kilograms, or about 11.7 pounds, the patients receiving the lower dose of generic rimonabant lost an average of 2.3 kilograms, or about 5.1 pounds, and patients receiving the placebo lost an average of 1.4 kilograms, or about 3.1 pounds. From this study, scientist concluded that generic rimonabant was effective in improving the weight loss results of the patients taking it.
At the same time, the study also found that many of the patients also had positive results for their glucose balance, implying that it might also work as an effective tool for fighting diabetes. Despite promising results, researchers still recommend a diet and exercise program in order for patients to see the best results while taking generic rimonabant.

The UC College of Medicine

Because of the way that generic rimonabant interacts with the brain, other studies have been undertaken to look at its effectiveness in other areas. One of these was done by the UC College of Medicine, where generic rimonabant was tested for effectiveness with helping patients quit smoking. The study determined that patients who took generic rimonabant had twice the tendency to quit smoking as those who took the placebo. Because of the results of this study, some researchers are starting to look at other potential uses for generic rimonabant for fighting other addictive behaviors.
Approval for the use of generic rimonabant is still pending in the United States, however, there is much promise that this drug could be the new weight loss leader.
